- childbirth preparation classes... with a difference
Our approach to childbirth preparation stems
from our experiences as certified doulas (labour
support providers) in assisting hundreds of pregnant women in actual labour.
While many prenatal classes focus on explaining the mechanics of birth and
early parenting, birth positive prenatal
classes focus on the actual techniques and skills used during labour to support
the labouring woman in achieving a satisfying childbirth experience. From
the births we have attended, and from birthing our own children, we have a
vast understanding of the different ways in which different women labour and
give birth.
We offer several prenatal workshops and
classes:
Here is what you can expect from birth positive
prenatal classes:
If you are wondering whether to take a prenatal
class, please visit our FAQ page to read answers to
the following questions:
Our classes reflect our deep understanding
of the following:
- all women experience pregnancy, birth
and parenting uniquely and this should be honoured,
- a woman labours instinctively and should be encouraged to do what feels
right for her,
- every woman has the right to choose the setting in which she would like
to give birth and the caregivers who will be present,
- the woman and her partner are involved in all aspects of the pregnancy,
birth and newborn care and as professionals we have an obligation to provide
research-based evidence to support them in their decision-making,
- birth is a fundamentally normal, uncomplicated process until medical evidence
is presented to the contrary,
- a woman should know all the tools that are available for managing labour,
as well as the benefits and hazards of each option for herself and her baby,
- the woman's understanding and experience of her birth is the most valuable
tool in assessing a positive birth outcome.
Some of the topics we explore through video,
discussion and lecture:
- anatomy and physiology of the birthing process
- homemade labour tools
- positions for first stage
- tools for relaxation, visualization, and touch
- exercises and positions for birth preparation
- choice of birthplace and hospital routines
- medical interventions: first stage
- emotional and physical comfort measures
- so what is pain?
- comfort measures for working with labour
- pushing and positions for second stage
- medical interventions: second stage
- gentle birth and infant feeding
- third stage and maternal wellness
- prenatal preparation for postpartum, including breastfeeding
- infant massage demonstration
